STUDENT GOVERNMENT PRESIDENT
ABOUT ME
I am William Brewster Morgan, a Junior from Winston-Salem, North Carolina. I am a History Major (my specialty is early American) with Minors in Latin (carpe diem!), Creative Writing (poetry is my forte), and Politics and International Affairs (insert controversial issue). Aside from long walks on the beach (my beach is Emerald Isle, North Carolina, if you want to know), I love people and words, written and spoken. On any given day, you might spy me in Campus Grounds taking a sip from my morning latte or chatting with any number of baristas and regulars. You might also see me on the move around campus, briefcase in hand. Whenever I can, I venture onto the Reynolda Trail and take a walk, always stopping midway at my favorite bench to sit, look, and think. I study history not just to get a Ph.D. and teach. I study history because I believe that the past is the teacher of the present. I believe history is our guide in our time. I am running for President of Student Government because I love Wake Forest and I want to serve my fellow students in the best way I can.

PURPOSE
A campaign for public office is very little without a foundation of principle. It is principle on which candidates must build their planks of policy; the two – principle and policy – should be inseparable. When I sought the presidency last year, I spoke much of principles for a reason. There must always be a “why,” a purpose which I felt was unclear and which I felt preceded any talk of “what” or “how” – the platform. Student Government needs to clarify and understand its principles before putting those principles into practice in service of the student body. Otherwise, I am afraid that we are missing the larger point of policy proposals – whether bread and circuses or meaningful reform – and are seeing those proposals in a vacuum, detached from the fundamental question of what Student Government should be at Wake Forest. This is the question which I, with your help, intend to answer.
The principles I spoke of last year – Representation, Accountability, Trust, Inspiration, and Openness – still apply this year. The difference is, I strive this year to explicitly match RATIO with corresponding explanations and action-plans. I hope that, with these principles and with the platform below, Student Government can purposefully pursue its ideal of servant leadership and the duties which follow it. I want Student Government to be intentionally relevant to the lives of the students it serves, to actively advocate for all students and actively address their issues and concerns, and to represent the best in Wake Forest students. I want Student Government to realize and fulfill the duties and obligations it has to all students.
Comments? Suggestions?
My platform is a malleable document.
I encourage any and all students to suggest changes or additions. This is, after all, a people's government.
